WHAT IS SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (SIA)?


Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is the process of assessing the intended positive or negative social impact of a project on its communities and stakeholders.  Identifying these social impacts assists to develop and implement Social Impact Management Plans designed to minimise the negative impacts of a major project.




WHEN DO YOU NEED A SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT?


  • Social Impact Assessments are a statutory requirement in Queensland for resource projects located within 125 kilometres of a regional community.


  • For non-resource projects, social impact assessments are non-mandatory, however they are highly recommended as a part of the project planning process and can be useful in gaining community acceptance for a project. 


  • The SIA will address the entire project lifecycle from concept to completion and beyond. For the resource industry, this will include cradle-to-grave operations, including rehabilitation of the site back to condition.
